Mahoosuc Notch is a deep gap in the Mahoosuc Range in Western Maine. The large rocks and boulders force hikers to rock scramble their way on this mile-long section of trail, creating obstacles that even experienced hikers have trouble with. There are tight squeezes, where you must remove your backpack to fit, and other areas with ten foot drops. It has been called "killer mile", and "toughest mile" by thru-hikers. The Appalachian Trail traverses the main ridge of the Mahoosucs between Shelburne, New Hampshire, and Grafton Notch in Maine.
