Crawford Notch is a major pass through the White Mountains of Hart's Location, New Hampshire. It is technically a gorge. The gorge is bisected by U.S. Highway 302, and the Saco River.
Crawford Notch, also known to locals as The Notch, was founded in 1771 by Timothy Nash. It was named for Abel Crawford, who was an explorer and trail-builder in the early 19th century.
The Highland Center Lodge sits in Crawford Notch in the town of Carroll and is run by the AMC.
Mount Willey, located on the side of the Notch, was named in memory of a tragedy that happened in August of 1826. The Samuel Willey fled their home to seek shelter from a storm coming in, and got caught in a rock slide. They died from being buried buried by the rubble.
